It happened at around 4:15 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, nearly three miles southwest of Long Beach.

The US Coast Guard Sector Long Island responded after receiving text messages saying a boat was taking on water near the SS Iberia shipwreck with three people in the water.

A crew from the agency’s Jones Beach station arrived and retrieved two divers and the vessel’s master from the water, officials said. The vessel master told them that the boat sank rapidly but he managed to escape through a bow hatch.

All three people were taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital for evaluation. None were seriously injured.

The SS Iberia sank in 1888 after it was struck by another vessel in dense fog. Its remains lie in 60 feet of water.
